“God Is God”  Romans 9:10-24, Sunday, May 13, 2012

“It does not , therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy”  -Romans 9:16  (NIV)

      If God is sovereign in election does it matter what we do or choose?  God seems unjust.  How can God condemn someone like Pharaoh, if he is only doing God’s will?  Paul is emphatic, God is neither unjust nor a tyrant.  God is God.  He does not answer to us, we answer to Him! He is the potter, we are the clay. Job wanted God to defend himself.  But when God appeared Job quickly became silent.  He realized God’s wisdom, and goodness went way beyond any human’s.  Be glad God is in charge.  He is good, patient, merciful and loving.  We are not.  We love God because He first loved us.  (1 John 4:19) No one is righteous or seeks God except by God’s grace.  No one merits God’s mercy. It is rooted in His will first. Yes, we are called on to believe in Christ. That decision is a real one too.  The Bible teaches  that God is is sovereign in election and all people are responsible to believe. It is a paradox that will surely be cleared up  in eternity.  God will be vindicated.  God is righteous in all He does.

     Next Sunday (May 20) we will consider why it is important for us to accept God’s sovereign rule.  It clarifies life’s meaning and purpose.  The sermon title is “Escaping Sin’s Confusion”
